Teacher Testimonies

(In case you need validation of our super-tutoring skills.)

The Writing Center is here for teachers to utilize as a helpful resource that makes their lives easier and benefits their students.  Here's what some other HWRHS teachers have experienced first hand and what they think about the Writing Center:

"Having a writing center tells our students two important things: that we as a school value writing and that writing is something they can improve." ~ Mr. Hellman

" I encourage my students, especially my freshmen, to go to the Writing Center to refine their rough drafts into final drafts.  I think that the Writing Center makes teacher's lives easier because it frees them up from focusing on the grammatical basics of writing and allows the teachers to really push their students to develop original and thoughtful ideas for the assignment." ~ Mr. Burnett

"I think that the Writing Center helps my students transform their outlines into full drafts.  In the past, I have brought tutors into my classroom to help when students were writing outlines for a paper.  I believe that tutors give an extra person to bounce ideas off of, and it allows for more conversational reflection to take place.   It's great to see the standard of writing that students can achieve, and it's even better to see their peers' accomplishments.  It shows them that any high schooler can be a good writer.  ALL students deserve to know that EVERYONE can write and learn to write well.  That's what I appreciate about the Writing Center."

~ Mrs. Burnett

"Even though most of my students don't have writing assignments, I  still encourage my study hall students to go!  Why not come to a quiet place to write or have a peer edit a student's paper?"

~ Ms. Maney

"As a teacher in the Writing Center, I have observed many students and tutors work

together to improve a paper. I am continually impressed by the tutors and their ability to make a

student feel comfortable and positive about the writing experience. Not once have I felt a tutor

gave bad advice, but many times I have felt that the suggestions made were the same I would make as

an English teacher. The tutors know their stuff and have a wonderfully unthreatening manner of

working with students from freshmen to seniors."

~ Ms. Karpa

"The writing center has helped students in their essay writing.  Students have been encouraged to go at all points of their writing process from brainstorming, to thesis development, to draft revision.  Students have been given an incentive to go often, with an extended due date, but even when not given an incentive students have also gone on their own.  Having gone on their own initiative says a lot about how the writing center has indeed been helpful.
It is great to have students be leaders by helping their fellow classmates and it is a nice thing to see such peer collaboration.
"
